Vorming:
→ had been + werkwoord + -ing

  • Zowel bij enkelvoud als meervoud altijd had been.

Voorbeelden:

  • I had been living here for three years before I learned the street names. (to live, to learn)
  • She was tired because she had been working all day. (to work)

Gebruik van de Past Perfect Continuous

    • They had been waiting for an hour before the bus finally arrived.
  2. Uitleggen hoe lang iets bezig was geweest vóór een ander moment in het verleden
    • We had been studying English for two years before we moved to London.
    • He was out of breath because he had been running.
  4. Negatieve vorm: had not been of hadn’t been + -ing
    • She hadn’t been paying attention, so she missed the instructions.

⚡ Tip: De Past Perfect Continuous gaat vaak samen met tijdsbepalingen of bijwoorden die aangeven hoe lang of tot wanneer iets bezig was (for, since, before, until, all day, enz.).

Bijvoorbeeld: Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain. (Er is bewijs: de donkere wolken.)

We gebruiken “will” voor spontane beslissingen, beloftes of voorspellingen zonder bewijs. Bijvoorbeeld: I forgot my wallet! – No worries, I will pay for you. (De beslissing wordt op dat moment gemaakt.)

Let op het verschil: I am going to visit my grandma next week. (Dit is al gepland.) vs. I think I will visit my grandma next week.

👉 If + had + voltooid deelwoord, would have + voltooid deelwoord

✅ Voorbeeld:
“If I had studied, I would have passed the test.”

  • “If I had studied” = Dit is niet gebeurd (ik heb niet gestudeerd).
  • “I would have passed the test” = Dit had kunnen gebeuren, maar gebeurde niet.

Hoe maak je een third conditional?

  • If-clausule: had + voltooid deelwoord
  • Result-clausule: would have + voltooid deelwoord

👉 Voorbeelden:
✅ “If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train.” (Maar we vertrokken te laat.)
✅ “If she had read the map, she wouldn’t have gotten lost.”

✅ “She wouldn’t have gotten lost if she had read the map.”

Third Conditional vs. Second Conditional

✅ “If I had studied, I would have passed.”
✅ “If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.”

Zero conditional

If/When + tegenwoordige tijd, tegenwoordige tijd

Voorbeelden:

  • “If it rains, the ground gets wet.” (Natuurwet – regen maakt de grond nat.)
  • “If you heat ice, it melts.”
  • “If you mix blue and yellow, you get green.”

Exercise 1

First conditional

If + tegenwoordige tijd, will/can + hele werkwoord

Voorbeeld:
“If it rains tomorrow, we will stay indoors.”

  • “If it rains tomorrow” (tegenwoordige tijd) = Mogelijke gebeurtenis in de toekomst.
  • “We will stay indoors” (will + hele werkwoord) = Waarschijnlijk gevolg.

First Conditional vs. Zero Conditional

  • First Conditional → Gaat over een mogelijke toekomstige situatie.
“If you study, you will pass the test.”
  • Zero Conditional → Gaat over algemene waarheden of feiten.
“If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.” (Altijd waar, geen uitzondering.)

🔹 Belangrijk: De first conditional gaat over de toekomst, terwijl de zero conditional over feiten gaat.

Exercise 2

Second conditional

If + verleden tijd, would + hele werkwoord

Voorbeeld:
“If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.”

  • “If I won the lottery” (verleden tijd) = Onwaarschijnlijke of denkbeeldige situatie.
  • “I would travel the world” (would + hele werkwoord) = Ingebeelde uitkomst.

Second Conditional vs. First Conditional

  • Second Conditional → Gaat over onrealistische of onwaarschijnlijke situaties.
“If I were rich, I would buy a castle.” (Onwaarschijnlijk, want ik ben niet rijk.)
  • First Conditional → Gaat over mogelijke en realistische situaties.
“If I work hard, I will pass the test.”

  1. Voor het hoofdwerkwoord, maar na het werkwoord “to be”:
    • She often goes to the gym.
    • They are usually happy.
    • He visits his grandparents every week.
    • We have meetings regularly.
    • Sometimes, I go for a walk in the evening.
    • Usually, she arrives on time.
